Tribal Cultural Director and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer: Helene Rouvier,THPO

Please visit the Cultural page

My name is Helene Rouvier and I am the new Cultural Director and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Wiyot Tribe.

Although raised in the Central Valley, I have lived in Humboldt County since 1970, working in a variety of jobs. Recently I returned to college to receive my degree in anthropology, and am now completing a graduate degree in museum studies. For the past few years, I have been working in contract archaeology (affectionately called “shovel bums”) throughout California, Nevada, and Arizona.

There are many ongoing projects (language programs, archiving, development of cultural center/museum, hunting/fishing rights, gathering permits, and protection of sites), as well as opportunity for new ideas. I want to provide members with opportunities for any other activities and training that is needed. Any ideas are welcome. You can reach me at cultural@wiyot.us or stop by the offices.
