Natural Disaster Funds

Was your home damaged by the storms over the New Years weekend?  Tribal council established a Natural Disaster fund that will pay up to $500 directly to the contractor who repairs your home.  These funds are limited and available on a first come first serve basis and are only available to Tribal member households residing within Counties declared a State of Emergency by the Governor of California.  For information contact (707) 733-5055

Need a ride to UIHS….

The Community Health and Wellness Department at UIHS can provide UIHS clients with transportation to and from medical, dental, and CFS appointments.  You will need to make the appointment on a Monday or Friday from 10-11, and call Virginia with at the very least one days notice.  I recommend in order to secure a ride you give as much notice as possible.

LIHEAP FUNDS AVAILABLE

This funding is to provide assistance to low-income households in meeting their home energy costs, particularly those with the lowest incomes and highest energy needs.  Highest priority will go to tribal member elders, disabled, and families with young children.  Please remember LIHEAP can not assist with utilities that have already been disconnected.  If you are interested in receiving LIHEAP contact Elsie (707) 733-5055 or stop and ask for the forms.  Funding is limited!

Sacred Land Film Project

The Sacred Lands Film Project began in the early 1990’s with the intention to profile indigenous cultures around the world struggling to protect their special places, to show the universality of the problem, and the fact that sacred sites are common to people all around the world.

Out of this project sprung films such as, “The Four Corners: A National Sacrifice Area? And In the Light of Reverence.  The project has recently seen success, as the Mohave Power Plant was shut down on December 31st.  The plant near Laughlin, Nevada has burned coal from Black Mesa since 1970.  The Black Mesa strip mine has consumed 50 billion gallons of groundwater from the aquifer beneath Hopi and Navajo land.  The closure of the power plant and shutdown of the slurry line will hopefully allow Hopi village and ceremonial springs to recover.  In March, five bay area screenings of In the Light of Reverence and Winnemem War Dance at Shasta Dam helped build support for the Winnemem campaign to regain federal recognition.

The Sacred Land Film Project is asking for your help.  By sending a tax deductible contribution to the Sacred Land Film Project you can help them to use the documentary In the Light of Reverence to help win protection for lands sacred to indigenous people around the world, and to help support research and development of their new film Losing Sacred Ground.  If you would like to send a donation make checks payable to Earth Island Institute/SLFP, PO Box C-151, La Honda, CA 94020.
