Indian Island, with its ancient shell mounds and rich history, remains an important symbol for many Northern California Indians. Since the massacre, our people have been denied access to this sacred site and have thus been unable to protect our ancestors buried on the island.

Today, after 140 years, we seek to reestablish our cultural connection to the island by once again hosting the World Renewal Ceremony on its original location. We plan to build a place where we can restore traditional ceremonies to our island. Plans include a dance area, a tribal gathering area, changing and regalia display buildings, a restored dock and canoe landing area, and a service and kitchen area.
